NEWS! NEWS! NEWS!
THE REWRITE OF "IN GOD'S NAME" IS ALMOST COMPLETE!
Branch 1, 'Creation and Covenant'
Branch 5, 'To the Ends of the Earth'
FINISHED for Years 1 to 6.
Branch 6, 'Mini Units' for you to choose from.
FINISHED - but to be added to each year
Branches 2, 3 and 4 for the Liturgical years
Years A (Matthew), B (Mark) and C (Luke)
FINISHED as Phase based units
to allow strong collegial teaching of the life of Christ.
What the units are!
They are Catholic!
In God's Name is an online Religious Education programme used by Catholic Primary Schools in the United Kingdom and Australia. Each unit draws on foundational documents of the Church, universal and local, and well researched best practice in Religious Education as an academic discipline. Written by one of the consultants for the Religious Education Directory, To Love you More Dearly, each unit brings both the vision and the mandated requirements of the RED to classroom practice. In God's Name presents a Catholic world view, expressed at Vatican II, through learning about the Traditions of the Church, Human Experience, Creation and Scripture, named as the sources of revelation in Dei Verbum.
They are collegial!
In God's Name offers a whole school approach to Religious Education, one in which all pupils explore a common theology or practice, differentiated by the RED End of Phase Outcomes, at an age-appropriate level.
This allows for strong collegial links across the school: the 'siloing' of staff teaching different content is avoided. Staff meetings where content is explored together and shared planning occurs and 'at the water fountain' conversations are encouraged.
Recognising that lack of teacher knowledge can be the biggest hurdle to successful teaching of RE, each unit provides the Key Information for Teachers (KIT) necessary for teaching of the theological content. Indeed the inclusion of significant teacher material marks the programme as 'one of a kind'. Content videos for staff and pupils, specifically commissioned art and activities by our KIP friend Ruby, and clear child-friendly explanations are a strength of each unit.
They are predictable!
The content found in In God's Name is arranged deliberately to mirror the Liturgical Calendar, expressed in the 5 branches of the RED. Three units, Branches 1, 5 and our own branch 6: the Universal Church, 'fix' content for Autumn 1, and Summer 1 and 2. Branches 2, 3 and 4, rotate, with the Church, through the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. The cyclical nature of the resource means that the life of Christ and the Church unfold naturally: horizontally, learning is passed from one resource to the next for further development; vertically, seasonal theologies introduced in one year are consolidated in other years.
They are research based!
Written by Dr Margaret Carswell, Senior Lecturer in Theology and Religious Education at Australian Catholic University, the units are both rigorous and practical. The name says it all. Deeply committed to Catholic schools and the teaching of Religious Education for more than 40 years, the units represent the summit of a career in Catholic Education that hopes to introduce pupils to the God in whose name they are made. If you want the jargon, the resources are hermeneutical and recontextualising. They have an educational spine with an invitational, catechetical heart while acknowledging a multi-faith world.
Finally, who is KIP?
KIP is the cartoon figure at the top of the page, the logo for the programme. KIP is an acronym for 'Key Information for Pupils', drawn by my daughter Stephanie to remind us of the people for whom all this matters: the pupils in our classrooms. KIP appears in posters and in some strategies - pupils can email KIP with questions or to show KIP their work...and they do!
