The Lord's Prayer - Asia
Mark David Walsh (Catholic), Jerusalem, Israel
When you pray the Lord’s Prayer:
Mass, prayer with teachers and at office prayer
What appeals to you about this prayer? What do you like about it?:
Its simplicity and focus on the vision that God has for a world where all will have enough ("bread") and all will put on eth mind of God ("kingdom"). The fact that it is addressed directly to God and can transcend Christianity. I have Jewish friends who have joined in its praying at interfaith gatherings.
Are there any words, phrases or ‘ideas’ within the prayer that have particular significance to you?
Whilst I have problems with the exclusive and dualistic language, e.g. Father and the Earth / Heaven divide. The idea that we can address God as a parent appeals to me as does the 'everydayness' of bread, forgiveness and temptation.
The prayer asks God for things that we need, for example that the kingdom might come and that we might be forgiven. Of the things the Lord’s Prayer asks for which one do you think the world needs most at this time?
At this point in history there is a "temptation" to live in a way that denies many the 'enoughness' that their "daily bread" promises.
