The Lord's Prayer - Australia

Sister Denise Mulcahy fcJ (Catholic), Richmond, Victoria, Australia

When you pray the Lord’s Prayer: (eg privately, at Mass, with your family/order/community/class etc)
Privately; in Community, at Mass

What appeals to you about this prayer? What do you like about it?
The Our Father appeals to me because it is the prayer Jesus taught the disciples.  I find that it is both a prayer of praise, as well as one of petition.

Are there any words, phrases or ‘ideas’ within the prayer that have particular significance to you?'
They will be done on earth as it is in heaven

The prayer asks God for things that we need, for example that the kingdom might come and that we might be forgiven. Of the things the Lord’s Prayer asks for which one do you think the world needs most at this time?
Forgiveness and reconciliation

Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory.
Shows that all things are God’s and he works through us.

When you pray the Lord’s Prayer: Church

What appeals to you about this prayer? What do you like about it?
The rhythm, connection throughout faiths, history, words.

Are there any words, phrases or ‘ideas’ within the prayer that have particular significance to you?
'forgive us our sins' & 'our father' - it is a very connecting statement when all praying together.

The prayer asks God for things that we need, for example that the kingdom might come and that we might be forgiven. Of the things the Lord’s Prayer asks for which one do you think the world needs most at this time?
Kingdom might come... but I would also say, don't just wait for God to make this happen.  God gives us the capacity to make it happen.

Helen-Mary Langlands fcJ

Do you pray the Lord's Prayer in another language?

We use this version of the Lord's Prayer in Aboriginal communities:

Our Father you are in heaven
May we talk about your name in a good way.
May you be boss in our lives.
May we follow your feeling here
As they do above.
Give us bread today.

We have hurt your feelings, feel sorry for us.
Others have hurt our feelings
We feel sorry for them.
Stop us from doing wrong
Save us all from the evil one.

May you be boss in our lives: In Aboriginal thinking this is a term of endearment for God the Father, the Creator Spirit in their lives.
